Art Hop FAQ Table of Contents

The basics

  • SEABA’s South End Art Hop started as a way to showcase local talents (featured in an old train car!) and has grown to over 125 locations featuring thousands of pieces of artwork with countless activities indoors and out for all ages.

  • Art Hop takes place over three days in September every year, on the weekend after Labor Day.

    The 2026 South End Art Hop takes place September 11, 12, & 13

  • Art Hop takes place over 1.5 miles along Pine Street and surrounding areas in the South End Arts District in Burlington, Vermont.

  • Nope! Art Hop hosts scheduled free events throughout the weekend, and exploring is encouraged. We look forward to seeing you there! (There are exceptions: Some of the events listed in the Art Hop program, hosted by South End businesses, may have a fee or cover charge, and the STRUT! fashion show will be ticketed.)

    Donations to SEABA are always welcome to help keep this event free - and we encourage you to support local artists exhibiting at Art Hop and throughout the year.

  • Art Hop sponsor Hotel Vermont is walking distance from the South End. Hotel Vermont, Burlington Vermont's independent hotel, offers an authentic local experience in the heart of downtown between Burlington's Church Street Marketplace and the shores of Lake Champlain. Dine at Juniper, Hotel Vermont's in-house bar and restaurant, serving seasonally-driven food and drink to guests and the community. Gather in the lobby by the wood-burning fireplace or find a seat on Juniper Terrace to watch the sun set over the Adirondacks. Find out more about Hotel Vermont.

    The Harborvale, right next to Hotel Vermont, is another great option.

Transportation & accessibility

  • Pine Street closes Friday, 5–10 p.m., from Kilburn to Howard; flaggers will direct traffic around via St. Paul Street.

  • Free parking and shuttle pick up is available at the Innovation Center (128 Lakeside Ave).

    The Maltex lot (431 Pine Street) is a paid/private parking at the edge of the densest art cluster.

    There is on-street parking available through much of the South End. Be sure to follow all parking signs and regulations. On Friday from 5-10pm, Pine Street will be closed between Kilburn and Howard.

    Walking and biking are encouraged.

  • Shuttles loop all weekend between parking and art sites. Board with Burlington Trolley Tours at Church and Main to the Soda Plant (266 Pine), or with SSTA at the Burton Snowboards lot (180 Queen City Park Road). Drop-off/pick-up is at the Maltex Building (431 Pine, paid parking). Free parking and pick up is available at the Innovation Center (128 Lakeside Ave).

  • Free bike valet (Local Motion, donated by Unsworth Properties) is at the Barge Canal (377 Pine) Friday night and Saturday during the day.

  • SEABA has indicated which sites are accessible on the print program map.

    You can also find Art Hop sites at seaba.com/arthopsites; if the member has added accessibility info, there will be a section called "accessibility notes."

    An accessible SSTA shuttle runs Howard Street to Queen City Park Road.

    Pine Street is closed (Kilburn–Howard) only on Friday. If a fellow attendee will be dropping you off, note that Pine Street will be closed between Kilburn and Howard on Friday but will be open to traffic on Saturday and Sunday.

    The parking lot behind the Maltex Building is at one end of the densest few blocks of the Art Hop. (This is a paid, privately owned lot.)

    If you'd like to start with just one building, the Soda Plant (at 266 Pine Street, between Kilburn and Maple) is accessible from the building's north lot and has many Art Hop sites indoors and food trucks outside.

  • The entire South End Arts District takes community safety seriously. Follow any posted signage on mask wearing and capacities. Utilize hand-sanitizing stations or bring your own. If you are not feeling well or have been in contact with someone with COVID-19, please stay home.

    You may enjoy all SEABA exhibitions online, and curated exhibitions are on view for up to three months should you wish to avoid the crowds during Art Hop weekend.

Finding your way around

  • Get ready for smiling faces, proud artists, and creativity spilling out of every studio and storefront. Explore nearly two miles of choose-your-own-adventure shopping across 100-plus locations.

  • Restrooms are located inside each SEABA-curated building, large public building, restaurant and bar.

Buying art & supporting artists

  • Art Hop is an excellent time to purchase work from artists! Here are a few ways to do that:

    1. At SEABA’s curated exhibitions, each piece is listed online at seaba.com/shop.

    2. The South End Arts District features work in other dedicated exhibition spaces, small businesses, and artist studios. Local artists of all ages work in an array of mediums. Look for signage on how to purchase directly from the establishment.

    3. Commissioning a custom work: Artists may supplement their practice by taking in commission work. Collaborating with a patron can be rewarding, though often challenging when you are also living up to other expectations. Know that your support is valuable, and being involved in the process may come with a higher price

  • Finding work that you enjoy is a great reason to document and remind yourself of whom to support later. Ask whether you may take a picture in a gallery or studio. It is often encouraged that you ‘tag’ their social media page if you choose to share online - so grab that business card!

Food & drink

  • Food trucks curated by Food Trucks of Vermont (of South End Get Down fame) will be on-site. Also visit South End restaurants and breweries year-round.

  • The Vaults (28 Howard Street) has filtered water fountains.

  • Please help us keep our city beautiful by taking your food items with you or using our provided compost, recycling and waste containers.

Participation

  • Yes! While registration is closed for this year’s event, there are a variety of ways for artists, businesses, and organizations to participate. There is no application process for most elements of the event, and we welcome your participation.

A few more words…

  • For 34 years, Art Hop has brought people together in Burlington to celebrate art, creativity, and community over the weekend following Labor Day. This year, Art Hop’s opening day coincides with the beginning of Rosh Hashanah at sundown, with the holiday continuing throughout the weekend.

    We recognize that this overlap will prevent some members of our Jewish community from participating in portions of Art Hop. We acknowledge that this is a meaningful conflict, and also want our neighbors to know how much we will miss seeing them over the weekend. SEABA Curated art exhibitions are on display online at seaba.com/shop and in person for up to three months. 

    To our friends and neighbors observing Rosh Hashanah, we wish you and your families a sweet, peaceful, and meaningful new year.

  • As Art Hop begins on September 11, we want to acknowledge those who lost their lives 25 years ago and the ways in which the events of September 11, 2001, forever changed our country and the lives of so many.

    Twenty-five years later, we gather together as a community, as we have each year at Art Hop, in good times and in hard ones.
