SEABA’S POLICY ON ARTISTIC FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION
The South End Arts and Business Association (SEABA), and by extension, the South End Art Hop, are strongly committed to Artistic Freedom of Expression.
We don’t pass judgment on any artwork, that is, we neither condone nor condemn any work.
We encourage everyone to see the artwork on display and come to their own conclusions about the material. If any questions arise, we also encourage viewers to ask questions of the artist(s) who created the work.
The Art Hop is a unique opportunity for creators and viewers to come together and create further dialogue, which furthers understanding.
We at SEABA hope that you share our desires for intellectual inquiry and Artistic Freedom of Expression. We hope to see you at the Hop!

15th ANNUAL SOUTH END ART HOP
HIGHLIGHTS + DELIGHTS
POLITICS + COMMENTARY + A DEEP FRYER
Sculptor and conceptual artist John LaFalce and Drew Luan Matott, the founder of Green Door Studios created an edition of altered books that are battered + deep fried, providing a commentary on America’s obsession with an unhealthy lifestyle, unstable foreign policy + blatant disregard for intellectualism. The deep fried books range in topic from American foreign policy, American dietary recommendations + science encyclopedia. Folks can bring their own books to be deep fried at this Art Hop interactive installment. Deep Fried Books, Friday at the Green Door Studio, 181/2 Howard Street, various times.
SEEKING… MR. GOODART
Looking for a one-night stand? Visual art and performance collide in this installment from Heat & Hot Water Productions. "Seeking . . ." is a work-in-progress that explores the funny, touching, sometimes heartbreaking way people connect through the personal ads. Saturday, 7, 8, & 9 pm at the Soda Plant.
FASHION + COMMERCE + KIDS N’ PUPPIES
Last year’s Strut at the Art Hop produced media darlings, designers with national followings + some amazing lines of Indie clothing to buy and wear. This year promises no less, assembled under the watchful eye of Xmas Maxon Alley, Reconstruction Designer + owner of the Green Closet Eco Chic Boutique. The two fashion shows are distinctly different events but both are hosted by WCAX’s own Jack Thurston + Syndi Zook of the Lyric Theatre Company along with music by DJ Precious. Strut II: Friday, Ava Bishop, Catalyst/Brand New, Laura Fuchs, Loraleh Harris, Joanne Kalisz, Carolyn Little, Tara Lynn, Janii Peterson, Autumn Polidor + Almir Salkic strut their clothing lines at 9m. Amusements + commerce takes place pre-show around 8pm. Strut II, Part II: Saturday at 3 pm, Kacey Boone, Joanne Kalisz + Zutano strut with jewelry, kids wear, accessories + clothes for pets. Both events are at 27 Sears Lane.
ART, MICRO BUSINESS + MARKET
It’s a One World Market out there and at the Art Hop. Experience some of the region's most creative + unique products in a festive, "open air" style vendor market setting with over 20 Vermont micro-enterprises, blending local + international flavors. Presented by City of Burlington's Community & Economic Development Office + by the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity's Micro Business Development Program this Art Hop premier takes place from noon-6:30pm, Saturday, at the Sears Lane site.
FIND THE BOINGS! 15 YEARS – 15 BOINGS
Scattered around the South End Art Hop area will be fifteen BOINGS - one for each year of the Hop. They could be in trees, in galleries, on roofs, in stores, on shelves, on doors. All can be seen from ground/floor level and in plain sight. While you may see a lot of boings around the South End this time year, the ones you need to find are special Birthday Boings. They’re the ones with the “15” in the arrowhead. Search for the boings, write down where you spot them, and when you find all fifteen (or as many as you can), send the list of their locations to info@seaba.com. Those that spot the most will be entered in a drawing for a fabulous boing-worthy prize. This contest runs from Wednesday, September 5 through Saturday, September 22. Lists must be received no later than Monday, September 24.
THE HEART OF EARTH IS ART
Explore the merger of ancient wisdom, modern technology, art and science. The Burlington Earth Clock, north of Oakledge Park on the bike path, is a circle consisting of 14 five-to-ten-foot-high stones in a ring. The center of the circle is a sundial made of flat granite, so when you stand in the exact center of the circle, your shadow tells the time of day. Take five minutes to connect with the beauty of place and the peace within you then express that through art, writing and mathematical calculations! Materials provided to capture those expressions Saturday, 10am-3pm.
DO DO THAT DOODLE THAT YOU DO SO WELL
Caleb Hanson from Marketing Partners says it's important to spend a few minutes a day doodling and on Saturday, from 1-3, he’ll tell you how to best go about it. See doodles and doodle-inspired artwork, watch a demo and get a free copy of "The Doodle Manifesto."
ARTICLES OF CLOTHING
Several opportunities to leave the Hop looking better than you arrive:
- Have a favorite illustrator in Seven Days? On Friday, artwork of Seven Days cartoonists James Kochalka, Harry Bliss, Rose Montgomery, and Alison Bechdel will be silk screened by Tick Tick on shirts at 255 So. Champlain Street.
- On Friday and Saturday, bring a piece of art, your favorite picture or the logo of your company and watch the folks at Amalgamated Culture Works, 420 Pine St., put it on a shirt, right before your eyes.
- But, if you want to learn how to do it yourself, head to 27 Sears Lane on Saturday, 1-3pm, as Guy Derry and Benjamin Stewart demonstrate how a t-shirt goes from being just a blank piece of clothing, to one that is vibrant with color and graphics.
LOCAL HISTORY + WATERBEDS, MY PRETTIES
The Emerald City of Oz, a waterbed store, was a Burlington staple for thirty years. Now the famed winged monkeys call One Main Street their home. They will be the centerpieces of a show called “Monkeys With Wings: The 1st 30 Years.” They were made by Jericho sculptor Steve Larrabee and more of his work will be shown on the main floor of Union Station. Downstairs will be a collection of art made for the store during its heyday. Muse Rik Carlson presents this show as an historical archive of an American culture bracketed by war, from Viet Nam to the Global War on Terrorism.
BURLINGTON + CITY + ARTS = BCA
Carlos Ferguson, an artist currently participating in Burlington City Arts’ 7 Below Artist-in- Residence program, works from an Airstream trailer that he has retrofitted and outfitted with projection equipment. He uses this as a kind of mobile projection module, using light on surfaces, either appropriated from his location or built. At Art Hop on Friday, Carlos will begin to facilitate a series of installations and projections in local areas, focusing on small town centers, surrounding the location of the residency, where he will engage the local community. The vital quality of the project lies with its capacity to be mobile and interact with a changing environment.
ART + MARKETING + LEARNING
An Art Hop Sunday event where participants can learn about blogging, podcasting, video for the web, and several web-based social networking tools like Flickr, YouTube, MySpace in a workshop led by filmmaker and blogger Bill Simmon. Specific digital media tools will be discussed. The workshop is presented by VCAM in association with Last Monday Interactive, a consortium of media artists and professionals who meet on the last Monday of every month to talk shop, show works-in-progress, and share experiences and techniques working with digital tools. Digital Tools For Artists at VCAM, 208 Flynn Ave. Suite 2G, 1pm - 3pm.
POETRY + HERITAGE + BABOO
Chris Abair became a “Storyteller” while working to compile a book of poems written by his grandfather, Vermont poet George Albert Leddy (1883-1967) aka “Baboo.” He came to appreciate the poetry when it was necessary to say the lines out-loud in order to edit the punctuation for the book. Since retiring from IBM in 2000, Chris has been performing his grandfather’s poetry + works by other poets like Robert Frost, around the region. Chris' performances are entertaining, historical + educational. The stories are told in rhyme + rhythm, full of emotions, and set in an era gone by. Storytelling by Ballads, VCAM Black Box Studio. Friday at 5pm and Saturday at 1pm.
