The 2009 Juried Show

The Cream of the Crop

Over the years, the Original Juried Show has become a central focal point of the Art Hop. It's an opportunity to see a broad survey of who’s who and what’s what in the visual arts scene regionally, all in one spot. Any artist who wants to participate can submit works in all media, including film, installation, and sound-based work.

Original Juried Show

Unlike most juried shows, all of the works submitted will be displayed. This has been a hallmark of this show from the beginning. Our juror selects works that generally equal approximately 18% of the submissions, shown together as the “Juror’s Selections.” The rest of the works are also shown, usually in the same building, and these two sets of work comprise The Original Juried Show.

Outdoor Juried Show

Seven years ago, a second juried show was conceived; the Outdoor Sculpture/Public Art Juried Show. This consists of sculptures, installations, and murals. It has been a great way for the community to get ready for the upcoming South End Art Hop as these works go up just about a month before the kickoff of the rest of the Art Hop. Pedestrians, bicyclers and motorists alike know that when they see these works spring up, the South End Art Hop is happening within a month.

Prizes

For both Juried Shows, there are cash prizes awarded for first, second, and third place. The juror selects these awards. Each year, someone from outside of the area who is heavily involved in the visual arts as an educator, critic, curator, gallerist, museum director and/or practicing artist, is selected and asked to provide their unique perspective to these works. In addition, because of the event’s heavy emphasis on participation and viewer engagement, everyone who views the Juried Shows can vote on their favorite piece from either show. The artwork with the most votes becomes the Peoples’ Choice Award winner for that year and wins a cash prize.

Juror Sarah Chaffee

This year’s juror is Sarah Chaffee, Gallery Director and a partner of McGowan Fine Art in Concord, New Hampshire. The gallery works predominately with northern New England artists. In addition to selecting artists to represent and conducting sales at the gallery, Sarah is also quite active in placing artwork with major corporate clients. She has acted as an independent curator and juror numerous times, interacting with other New England based institutions, such as the New Hampshire Institute of Art, St. Anselm’s College, St. Paul’s School and Southern NH University. Finally, Sarah has been active in the Concord, NH area as a member of the Concord Creative Economy Task Force, which has some overlap conceptually with SEABA and performs similar activities in its own locale.
