2008 South End Art Hop Juried Show

Over the years, the Original Juried Show has become a central focal point of the South End Art Hop, and this year, all the prizes for both Juried Shows are sponsored by FairPoint Communications, and we thank them for their commitment to the arts in Vermont.

The Juried Show is an opportunity to see in one spot, a broad survey of “who’s who and what’s what,” in the visual arts scene regionally. Any artist that wants to participate in this juried show can. Furthermore, the show accepts works in all media, including film, installation and sound-based work.

Unlike most juried shows, all of the works submitted will be displayed. This has been a hallmark of this show from the beginning. Our juror selects works that generally equal approximately 18% of the submissions. These works are shown together as the “Juror’s Selections.” The rest of the works are also shown, usually in the same building, and these two sets of work, comprise our Original Juried Show.

Six years ago, a second juried show was conceived; the Outdoor Sculpture/Public Art Juried Show. This consists of sculptures, installations, and murals. It has been a great way for the community to get ready for the upcoming South End Art Hop Festival, as these works go up just about a month before the kickoff of the rest of the Art Hop. Sculptures and other outdoor works are sited throughout the South End of Burlington. Pedestrians, bicyclers and motorists alike know that when they see these works spring up, the South End Art Hop is happening within a month.

For both Juried Shows, there are cash prizes awarded for First, Second and Third Place Awards. The juror selects these awards. Each year, someone from outside the area geographically, who is heavily involved in the Visual Arts as an educator, critic, curator, gallerist, museum director and/or practicing artist, is selected and asked to provide their unique perspective to these works. In addition, because of the event’s heavy emphasis on participation and viewer engagement, everyone who views the Juried Shows can vote on their favorite piece, which can be from either show. The artwork with the most votes becomes the Peoples’ Choice Award Winner for that year, and wins the cash purse attached to that prize.

This year’s jurors are Adriane Herman and Brian Reeves. This is our first husband and wife team collaborating as jurors. Adriane and Brian are both practicing artists living and working in South Portland, Maine. They are also arts educators, commentators and curators. Adriane has an MFA in printmaking from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a BA in both English literature and art history from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts and graduated cum laude. She has her work in the permanent collections of Arkansas State University, The Art Institute of Chicago, Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University, Kohler Art Library, Mortimer Rare Book Room in Neilson Library at Smith College, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Spencer Museum at the University of Kansas, Walker Art Center, and The Whitney Museum of American Art.

Brian has his MFA in the combined disciplines of painting, printmaking, graphic and package design, photography, video, performance, installation, and CD and web design from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also has a BFA from the University of Northern Iowa, with a concentration in traditional printmaking, and graduated Cum Laude. In 2007 and 2008 to date alone, he has exhibited in Arizona, San Francisco, California, St. Louis, Missouri, Long Island City, New York, Raleigh and Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Olympia, Washington, as well as internationally in Austria, Belgium, Canada, Lithuania, South Korea, Sweden, and Taiwan. Between 2001 and 2008, to date, he has delivered thirteen lectures as a visiting artist and participated in five major panel discussions. Their work challenges the notion of significant distinction between the “high arts” and “low brow culture,” and causes viewers to question their relative value systems in light of the cultural moirés competing for attention today. Although they each have their own art practices and a significant body of independent work, they have often collaborated on art projects. It is in this spirit that they will be approaching this year’s events at the South End Art Hop.
