2008 South End Art Hop Featured Events

ART OF THE 21ST CENTURY • Site 56

Champlain College, Burlington Fletcher Free Library, Soundtoys, Burlington Telecom
Soundtoys, Inc., 225 Church Street
Friday 5 -10 pm
Saturday 9 am - 4 pm

The creative artist community and the entrepreneurial business endeavors that blanket the South End of Burlington are the threads in the fusion of culture and commerce that comprise SEABA’s mission. When interwoven during the South End Art Hop, the fabric and identity of our South End community is strengthened, creating relationships that last well beyond the Art Hop.

This year, a prime example of the connected community will take place when Champlain College’s Emergent Media Center--in partnership with the Fletcher Free Library and broadband support by Burlington Telecom--will showcase an innovative type of fusion: art, programming and learning. There will be student-crafted interactive games produced with national partners, Google mapping technology customized for our own community, a sound lab and, of course, lots of visual experiences! Now playing, on the ground floor of SoundToys--a Burlington-based audio plug-ins software company.

A must-see experience during your art-hopping!

BURTON SNOWBOARDS • Site 1

80 Industrial Parkway
Opening Reception Celebration, Friday 5 - 9 pm
Hands-on Recycled Art, Saturday 12 - 2 pm

Not since Maypo was developed in the Maltex Building on Pine Street in 1953 has a South End business received the international recognition of Burton Snowboards. Founded in 1977, the name Burton has become synonymous with the sport of snowboarding. First came the boards themselves, then all the associated gear followed, making Burton THE name, THE company in snowboarding. As the most southern stop during the South End Art Hop it’s a great place to start your hopping. Original snowboard artwork and featured pieces by Burton artists, music, and more on Friday, 5 - 9 pm. On Saturday, Hands-on Recycled Art: activities for kids from 12 noon - 2 pm.

MAKE A NEWS RACK AN OBJECT D’ART • Site 8

Champlain Elementary School, 800 Pine Street
9 am -3 pm

Presented by the Burlington Free Press

The first Design-a-Rack contest kicks off at the Art Hop. The contest presents opportunities for teams of local art students to demonstrate their creativity by turning old news racks into works of art! A “work-in-progress” rack will be on-site to encourage children to paint their self-portraits on the rack. This rack will then be moved to the Boathouse on Burlington’s waterfront for public viewing.

LAURA WINTERBOTTOM

Laura Winterbottom loved Art Hop. She’d make sure her family would visit Burlington the first weekend of September to share it with her. Even though an accomplished artist, she never exhibited her work at the Hop. To that end, SEABA is pleased to join the Laura Kate Winterbottom Memorial Fund in presenting a showing of Laura’s work in the SEABA Hallways through the month of September.

Art Hop Saturday also coincides with the second annual Laura’s March, a benefit for the Fund’s efforts in raising money and awareness for Women Helping Battered Women and the Women’s Rape Crisis Center. The March (you can also run, walk, bike or skate) takes place on the Burlington Bikepath beginning (at 10am) and ending Oakledge Park. To register or make a donation, go to www.firstgiving.com/lkwfund
